Catalog Item Import

The catalog item import action allows Administrators to import a list of Print on Demand or Personalized catalog items into ContentWelder. Catalog items in the spreadsheet will be created and routed to the configure step in ContentWelder.

Use of the Catalog Item Import feature requires an understanding of:

Catalog items can be uploaded via a spreadsheet or as a zip file containing the catalog items spreadsheet, adhoc items and InDesign packages. Refer to the table in the Catalog Item Spreadsheet section for field names and descriptions of the field names in the spreadsheet.

Create Catalog Item Import Spreadsheet

Create a spreadsheet containing a list of the catalog items.

Note: Access lists must be added to ContentWelder prior to populating the catalog item import spreadsheet. Refer to the Access Lists section for additional information.

Note: Preferred vendors must be added to ContentWelder prior to populating the catalog item import spreadsheet. Refer to the Vendors section for additional information.

A spreadsheet with fields shown in the table below must be created and populated with the catalog items data. A sample of the CatalogItem import spreadsheet can be downloaded by clicking this link: CatalogItemUploads.xls. Refer to the catalog item spreadsheet table below for a list of fields and descriptions of each field.

Note: Required fields must be populated with a value. Required fields are highlighted in green in the CatalogItemUploads spreadsheet.

Catalog Item Import Package Zip File

To upload catalog items into ContentWelder via the Upload Catalog Item import action, a zipped package must be created if the catalog items are being uploaded via a zip file.

Note: Only PDF and zip files are supported for import into ContentWelder via the catalog item import process.

The catalog import package will contain:

  • The catalog item spreadsheet containing all of the catalog items. This file is required and the catalog item import will be unsuccessful without it. Refer to the catalog item spreadsheet table below for a list of fields and descriptions of each field.
  • PDF copies of adhoc documents. This is not required for a successful import.
  • InDesign Packages. This is not required for a successful import.

Note: Errors during the upload process must be resolved before the catalog items can be successfully imported into ContentWelder. Refer to Catalog Item Import Errors for additional information.

Catalog Item Import Spreadsheet

Alternatively, catalog items can be uploaded into ContentWelder via the Upload Catalog Item import action as a standalone spreadsheet. Refer to the Create Catalog Item Import Spreadsheet section for instructions on how to create the catalog item import spreadsheet. Refer to the catalog item spreadsheet table below for a list of fields and descriptions of each field.

Note: The catalog item import spreadsheet must be titled "upload.xls" before it can be uploaded into ContentWelder.

Upload Catalog Item Spreadsheet

To upload the catalog items import spreadsheet, first access the Catalog Items page by clicking on the Catalog then Catalog Items menu option.

Click the CatalogItem Imports button to display the Upload CatalogItem Import dialog box.


Select the Microsoft Excel file containing the catalog items that will be imported and then upload the file by clicking the Upload button.

The uploaded file will be shown in the User Imports screen.

Return to the Catalog Items page to view the catalog items that were uploaded.

Catalog Item Import Errors

The Status column of the CatalogItem Imports view shows an error status if there is a failure during the import process.

Note: All errors must be resolved before the catalog item import can be successful.

To view details of a catalog import error, first click on the row for the import and then click the Notes tab.

The Processing report shows a log with details of the import. Click on the Processing report to view catalog item import errors.

Details on the import error will be shown. Administrators must resolve these errors and then re-import the catalog items.

In the screenshot below, the error indicates that the Catalog Item Import spreadsheet was not found and could not be uploaded to ContentWelder.

The fields shown in the table below must be created and populated with the catalog items data.

This is the preferred vendor name that matches the name of a vendor in ContentWelder. If you are printing with FedEx office, the print vendor will always be FXO.

Preferred vendors must be added to ContentWelder prior to populating the catalog item import spreadsheet. Refer to the Vendors section for additional information
